The first eco-sustainable hotel in Italy’s fashion capital Milanopts for Green Design from Ahlen

The 4-star Superior hotel Milano Scala is the first eco-sustainable hotel in Italy’s fashion and design capital, Milan. All rooms and suites in the historic boutique hotel, which dates back to the 19th century, were planned and furnished with particular focus on sustainability and durability. In implementing this forward-looking hotel concept, Kaldewei impressed the hotel’s design team with stylish designer baths and enamelled shower surfaces in recyclable steel enamel 3.5mm.

Located in the picturesque artists’ quarter Brera, the seven-floor hotel Milano Scala underwent a complete overhaul in 2010. Its design was based on a classic Italian opera. A number of the rooms bear the names of famous arias and compositions, while large paintings depict familiar opera scenes.

Along with 62 rooms, ten suites and atmospherically designed lounges, the hotel has a generously proportioned roof terrace offering a breathtaking view of Milan’s historic centre. To preserve the charm of the ancient building, all the while meeting the modern, future-oriented criteria of eco-friendly building, a special approach was adopted. The hotel was equipped with a heat recovery system to regulate the temperature and produce hot water. The Milano Scala subscribes exclusively to using renewable energy resources. These efforts towards sustainability make the luxury establishment the first carbon-neutral hotel in the city – a breath of fresh air for the fashion capital, whose environment, like that of many other major cities, is heavily polluted by carbon dioxide emissions.

Under proposals by architect Luigi Marchetti of Studio Cibic, the interior was designed to blend with the hotel’s overall eco-friendly concept. Hence the bathrooms in the various rooms and suites now feature Kaldewei products. The products selected were enamelled shower trays from the Duschplan and Superplan ranges along with Puro, Ellipso Duo Oval and Classic Duo baths in Kaldewei steel enamel 3.5mm. Their durability in combination with the purity of the base materials used form a strong ecological argument for recommending Kaldewei products in sustainable building projects.

Kaldewei has been serious in its ecological responsibility for over 90 years now, always ensuring attractive and timeless design meet the modern requirements of sustainable building. The company is the first European bathroom manufacturer to complete the thorough analysis process for the GermanSustainableBuildingseal of quality to receive the relevant IBU (Institut Bauen und Umwelt e.V. – German Construction and Environment Institute) environmental product declaration in accordance with ISO 14025 for its products. This makes Kaldewei the ideal partner for builders demanding superior quality, excellent design and durability of the products used, as well as sustainable design and construction of the property itself.
